Jazz Band Audition Information
Auditions for both jazz bands will be held in Howard Hall during the first week of classes. Please sign-up for a time on the bulletin board in the lobby by the music office. Times are available on a first-come-first-serve basis. Look for sign-up sheets to be posted during the week before classes.
Requirements
Jazz Winds/Brass
Demonstration of jazz knowledge and literature through prepared piece(s); a jazz standard or other jazz composition, improvising/soloing over a 12-bar blues in the key of F or B flat, sight reading excerpt, chromatic scale (At least 2 octaves)
Jazz Percussion
Demonstration of jazz knowledge and literature by playing various styles and beats such as swing/samba/bossa/latin/brushes, improvised solo over a 32 bar form, sight reading excerpt
Bass
Demonstration of jazz knowledge and literature: be prepared to play a 12 bar blues; excerpt from a Jazz standard or other Jazz composition, sight reading excerpt. Some improvisation may be requested by the director.

University Chorus Audition Information
Auditions for University Chorus (MWF 1:10-2:00) for all voice parts will take place during the first week of classes.
Sign-up for an individual audition time located below the University Chorus poster on the bulletin board in the lobby of Howard Hall.
Audition times will be posted the week before classes start.
There is nothing to prepare. Previous choral experience suggested but not required.

Percussion Ensemble Audition Information
Members of Stephen Versaevel’s percussion studio are generally expected to participate in the MSU percussion ensemble. Even then, the group is reserved for advanced players only. To inquire about joining, please contact Professor Versaevel directly.
