Montana Chamber Music Workshop

July 22-28, 2012 - CANCELLED

For Intermediate-Advanced Ability Levels

We are very pleased to announce the 2012 Montana Chamber Music Workshop. This fun, friendly, amateur chamber music festival for adults will be held at Montana State University-Bozeman July 22-28, 2012. Participants will have the choice of staying in dormitory suites adjacent to the School of Music, or using hotel accommodations. Approximately 12 ensembles (primarily strings and piano) will be formed and coached by six professional musicians including Angella Ahn, violin, of the Ahn Trio. The in-depth morning assignments will be grouped strictly by strings or winds. Pre-formed wind or string groups will be accepted and other individual requests will be considered.

MCMW History

Mary Clement Sanks was literally raised in the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, which was started by her mother and aunt. Mary sang in the Children's Chorus, studied with composer Ernest Bloch, and took violin lessons with her father, a teacher of many beginning students including Isaac Stern. As an adult, Mary taught at the University of Utah, and at Montana State University. In 1971 she started the Adult Chamber Music Festival at MSU, which she was passionately involved with until her death in 1994. It later became the Montana Chamber Music Workshop.

MCMW Structure

MCMW takes place in Howard Hall, at the Montana State University-Bozeman School of Music. Participants have one or two ensemble assignments daily, which are each coached for half of their duration. The morning assignment meets every day, in order to focus on one piece of music in depth for an extended period of time. These groups may be either "pre-formed" by participants, or assigned by June 15 in order to give players time to prepare. The second assignment meets in the afternoon, each a unique grouping of players and repertoire, formed in consultation with the coaching faculty during the week. Masterclasses by coaching staff on a variety of topics take place in the late afternoon. Evenings include a Staff Concert, two Participant Concerts (Forums) featuring excerpts from the afternoon assignments, practice time, "pick-up" groups (Freelancing), and relaxed socializing.

Bozeman and Surrounding Areas

Bozeman is one of the most diverse small towns in the Rocky Mountain West, with an eclectic mix of artists, professors, ski enthusiasts, ranchers, and entrepreneurs all of whom are drawn here by the city's world-class outdoor recreation, Montana State University spirit, and a slice of old fashioned America. In addition to the numerous attractions in Bozeman, there are literally hundreds of sights within a short drive, including Yellowstone National Park, that lure visitors from around the world.
