Course Planning for LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses)
LPNs may enroll in lower division (freshman and sophomore) course work on
a part-time or full-time basis. Many students attend part-time to allow for
personal demands such as employment and family responsibilities. Junior and
senior course work (upper division) requires full-time attendance for two years.
Course work may begin during any semester: fall, spring or summer.
Student advisement is individualized to allow for careful course selection
to meet University and College curriculum requirements. Many nursing students
are non-traditional-age students (25 years and older). These students benefit
from individualized course planning and scheduling. The College of Nursing
takes great pride in providing individualized advisement as a beginning step
to facilitate academic success. The University Resource Center (Disability,
Re-Entry and Veterans Services) offers may services as well. They are located
in the Strand Union Building (SUB) Rm 155 and can be contacted at (406) 994-2824.
A specific option available to LPNs is the opportunity to challenge the sophomore-level
nursing courses:
- N220: Foundations of Ethical Nursing Practice – 2 crs (written examination);
- N223: Foundations for Planning & Providing Clinical Nursing care – 4
crs (both written and clinical examinations);
- N224: Pathophysiology – 3 crs (written examination); and
- N239: Health Assessment across the Lifespan – 4 crs (both written
and clinical examinations).
A College of Nursing advisor is available to discuss the challenge examination
process and associated costs with interested LPNs. Please contact Debbie McCray
at (406) 994-3785 or dmccray@montana.edu for
more information.
