Consistent with trends in education within nursing and other health care fields, the MSU College of Nursing has developed comprehensive simulation laboratories to enhance the valuable learning and assessment opportunities inherent to the clinical education component of our nursing programs. Initially, through the appropriation of student equipment fee funds from the University, the College was able to purchase adult simulation patients for each of our campuses (Billings, Bozeman, Great Falls, Kalispell and Missoula). Subsequently, with additional funding from student equipment fees provided again by the University, the College has purchased simulation babies for each campus allowing us to simulate new-born nursery/labor and delivery rooms.

The simulation curriculum is now incorporated into three of the four upper division semesters and is being used in the medical/surgical course, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatric nursing, and leadership/management classes. The environment provided by the simulation labs is proving to be truly invaluable for students and an incomparable and safe way for educators to evaluate whether students are able to apply theory to applied nursing care. It is showing us that no amount of clinical is too much and providing our students with the multitude of scenarios, opportunities, and repetition required to ensure that exceptional practice is internalized.

We are very pleased to be able to provide our students with these advanced training tools for their own educational benefit as well as the ultimate benefit of the patients in our state health care system.

The following describes some of the features of the simulation mannequins:

  • Full scale adult/infant patient simulators which allows the learner to perform relevant pediatric emergency skills and scenarios.
  • Interactive manikins which provide immediate feedback regarding interventions.
  • Simulators utilize software generating automatic debriefing based on the event log synchronized with video pictures, which provides immediate, detailed feedback on performance to learners.
  • Realistic airway system allows accurate simulation of all relevant difficult airway management and patient care scenarios.
  • Realistic breathing patterns and complications bring realism to the simulation experience.
  • IV training arm and IV/IO legs allows practice of peripheral intravenous and intraosseus therapy.

Sincere thanks to all those who have made these laboratories possible:

  • MSU Provost’s Office, Student Equipment Fee funds
  • Elizabeth Wick, benefactor, Great Falls
  • Montana Legislature and Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education, equipment and technology grant
  • Benefis Health System, additional equipment
