8/11/99 - BOZEMAN A meat scientist will become a part of Montana State University's Animal and Range Science Department this fall.
Jane Boles will teach classes in meat science, an area the MSU department has been without for several years.
"We're very excited to have Jane join the faculty and re-establish the meat sciences program at MSU," said Pete Burfening, head of the department. "We're also looking forward to having her expertise in adding value to livestock and livestock products."
Boles has a bachelor's degree in animal science from the University of Missouri at Columbia and master's and doctoral degrees from Iowa State University in Food Science and Human Nutrition/Animal Science (meat science). She also taught and coached the meats evaluation team there.
Boles brings an international background to the position, said Burfening. She will move to MSU from the value-added beef program at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, has worked as a meat scientist at the Meat Industry Institute of New Zealand and in a similar program in Australia. As a graduate student at Iowa State, she received the distinguished research award for her research in animal science.
In addition to teaching classes in meat science, Boles do research and cooperate with producers to add value to livestock carcasses.
Boles said one of the biggest factors in her accepting the position was the faculty.
"There seems to be a lot of cooperation and teamwork occurring. I like to work in a team atmosphere, because you always learn from other people on the team," said Boles. " I also feel that my knowledge will add to the department and hopefully help the meat and animal industry as a whole."
