BOZEMAN -- Crop and pest management in small grains will be the focus of a Jan. 8-10 meeting at Montana State University-Bozeman.

The program is useful not just for producers, but also for other agricultural professionals such as certified crop advisors and consultants. In particular, the school will focus on aspects of small grains weed control and genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for weed control.

Special speakers this year will include Dan Ball of Oregon State University who on Jan. 8 will discuss Roundup-ready wheat, and control of volunteer wheat, downy brome and jointed goatgrass.

In addition, Sally Metz, a Monsanto research team leader dealing with GMOs, will talk about GMOs and the agricultural industry. Dan Barber will provide a Montana seed growers perspective.

The school will be held at MSU's Plant Growth Center. Other program topics will include insects, micro- and macronutrients, ag waste, pesticides, marketing, soil fertility, crop rotations and plant diseases. There will also be sessions on guidance and auto-pilot systems.

Participants are eligible to receive 18 certified crop advisor credits as well as six pesticide applicator recertification credits. Participants should register as soon as possible. Enrollment is limited to 35 people per school, allowing participants to interact with specialists.

The $200 fee includes a subscription to the Montana Crop Health Report, other publications and refreshments. To print out a registration form to mail in, go to: http://ipm.montana.edu or, or contact MSU Conference Services at 406 994-3333.
