03/29/98 BOZEMAN -- Montana State University entomologists' work is part of a feature in March's National Geographic Magazine.
"Planet of the Beetles" in the March 1998 magazine refers rather extensively to Michael Ivie and his work in the MSU Entomology Department. Ivie is an expert on beetles, and he and his wife LaDonna inventoried over 1,200 species of beetles in Glacier National Park after the 1988 fires.
The National Geographic story by Douglas Chadwick describes how beetles can be used to indicate ecological health, because of the many species associated with each stage of plant succession. Chadwick is a Montanan who lives in Whitefish.
"'These critters,' said Mike, 'are the ultimate indicator species,'" in the Chadwick article.
