BOZEMAN -- Michael W. Tess became interim department head of Montana State University's Animal and Range Sciences Department effective Oct. 1.

Tess filled the position most recently held by Pete Burfening. Burfening had been in MSU's Animal and Range Sciences department since 1968 and department head since 1997. He has accepted a post with the USDA.

Tess has been a researcher of livestock production systems at MSU since 1988 and has taught a variety of classes including beef cattle management and advanced animal breeding. His degrees include a bachelors from California State Polytechnic College in 1971, a masters from MSU in animal science in 1978 and a doctorate in animal science from the University of Nebraska in 1981.

In announcing the position, Sharron Quisenberry, dean of MSU's College of Agriculture, said that a national search to fill the permanent department head of Animal and Range Sciences position will begin soon.
