04/23/98 BOZEMAN - Tourism is one of the largest industries in Montana, so its only natural that many communities are exploring their tourism potential. But since tourism can have social, environmental and economic impacts, its important to consider both the benefits and costs of expanded tourism.
Thats why the Community Tourism Assessment Program was developed by the Western Rural Development Center. CTAP has been implemented in about a dozen Montana communities through the MSU Extension Service and the Dept. Of Commerces Travel Montana division.
A new video produced by the MSU Extension Service and funded by Travel Montana shows how six Montana communities implemented a tourism related project after surveying residents and reaching a consensus to enhance their tourism attractions and services.
Featured towns include Choteau, Deer Lodge, Ft. Belknap, Hamilton, Lewistown, and Three Forks. Projects such as visitor centers, recreation areas, public facilities and dinner trains are highlighted in the tape.
The 21-minute videotape is called "Community Tourism Assessment Program." It can be borrowed through your county's MSU Extension Office or purchased by sending $14.95 (please check cost, this was the cost in April 1998) to MSU Extension Publications, P. O. Box 172040, MSU, Bozeman, MT 59717. Credit card orders can be placed by calling 406-994-3273.
