BOZEMAN - - Berger Memorial Scholarships for American Indian students planning to attend Montana State University-Bozeman are available annually. For the 1997-98 academic year, deadline for applications was March 7, but students are encouraged to check current deadlines.
According to Wayne Stein, director of the Center for Native American Studies at MSU-Bozeman, three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.
"The scholarships are for an entering freshman at MSU, a graduate from a tribally-controlled community college who is transferring to MSU, and a first-year graduate student."
This year's recipients of Berger Memorial Scholarships are James Burns, a graduate student from the Northern Cheyenne tribe, Lance Matthews, a tribal college transfer from the Blackfeet tribe and Dion Tang, a freshman from the Northern Cheyenne tribe.
Undergraduate applicants must graduate from an accredited high school or a tribally controlled college and be admitted to MSU-Bozeman. Candidates for the graduate student scholarship must be admitted to MSU's College of Graduate Studies. Applicants also must be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe or the Little Shell Band of Chippewa.
Application forms are available at local high school counselor offices, tribal college financial aid or counselor offices, Native American programs at the University System campuses, and the Center for Native American Studies, 2-152 Wilson Hall MSU, Bozeman, MT 59717-2340.
