Healthy Montanans focus of PBS special

11/16/2001 BOZEMAN --Montanans talking about healthy eating and adopting healthy lifestyles are the focus of a live hour long special on Montana PBS from 7-8 p.m. Nov. 27.

"This will be a dynamic program that features real Montanans sharing their positive approaches to eating well and staying active at home, school and work," said Katie Bark of the Montana Team Nutrition Program housed at Montana State University.

"The program will focus on the ABC's of Health to help families stay stronger, live longer and enjoy living fit," Bark said.

The special will feature Dayle Hayes, a dietitian from Billings, who focuses on the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans and talks about the "supersizing" of the American diet.

Parent Sara Orchard from Bozeman, a mother of four, will talk about healthy meal planning and keeping a family active.

Kim Anderson, the principal of Whitefish Central Schools, will highlight the work Whitefish has done to promote healthy eating which included removal of soda machines in schools and replacing them with fruit juice and offering healthy snacks in the lunchroom.

Bruce Colton, health and physical education teacher at Chief Joseph School in Bozeman and wellness coordinator for Bozeman schools, will talk about how adults can stay active and how physical education classes have changed from an emphasis on team sports to lifestyle exercise.

The special is hosted by Bozeman television reporter Amy Jacobs. It's funded by a USDA Montana Team Nutrition Training Grant.

The public is welcome to be part of the live audience at the KSUM studios in Visual Communications Building on the campus of MSU. Audience members should plan on arriving by 6:30 p.m.
