Parents, Families of MSU Students Invited to Campus Oct. 26-28

10/04/2001 BOZEMAN -- Parents and families of Montana State University students are invited to attend the 11th annual Parent/Family Fall Weekend scheduled Oct. 26-28 at the Bozeman campus.

The Parent/Family Association established the family weekend to help parents learn more about the Bozeman campus while spending time with their MSU student.

A full range of informative and entertaining activities are set for the weekend.

Events on Friday, Oct. 26, include college receptions and discussions about career opportunities and life on campus. There will be open houses both in residence halls and in Greek houses. At 1:30 p.m. Ralph Brigham, director of MSU's Career Services, will discuss what MSU students can do to prepare for their careers. A question-and-answer session to discuss any aspect of a student's university life will follow Brigham's presentation. Parents also will have the opportunity to visit their student's college and residence during open houses held by each college, residence hall and Greek house. At 6:30 p.m. Friday's events will culminate with the Rocky Mountain Rendezvous, which includes dinner hosted by President Geoff Gamble and his wife Patricia and entertainment by the Jeni Fleming Jazz Combo.

The weekend will continue Saturday, Oct. 27, with a breakfast hosted by Bobcat Boosters, Athletic Director Glenn Lewis and Cathy Conover, Director of University Relations. What has become a highlight of the weekend, the Favorite Faculty Lectures, will begin at 9:55 a.m. Saturday. Billy Smith, professor of history, will discuss "Lewis and Clark's America," and Cathy Cripps, professor of plant sciences and plant pathology will discuss "Montana Mushrooms and Miracle Molds." At 10:55 a.m. Ilse-Mari Lee, professor in the music department, will present "Music and Imagination." Saturday afternoon families will have the opportunity to raft the Yellowstone River or attend the football game between MSU and Northern Arizona University.

"A Taste of Home" dinner begins at 4:30 p.m. Residence Life will serve dinner made from recipes collected from parents of students currently living in the residence halls. Steve Banachek, mentalist, mind reader and magician of the mind, will perform at 8 p.m.

The weekend will wrap up Sunday with a farewell breakfast hosted by President and Patricia Gamble, a Parent/Family Association annual meeting and another chance to raft. The "Four Rivers" Raft Trip will follow the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition through the Missouri Headwaters.

Preregistration is required, and the deadline is Oct. 12. Registration is $18 per person with a maximum of $40 per family. Additional fees are charged for some events.
