11/16/2001 BOZEMAN--Montana's
Board of Regents, administrators of the affairs of the state's
higher education, will discuss issues ranging from new centers to
old roofs when it convenes for its quarterly meeting Thursday and
Friday this week at the campus of Montana State University.
Work for many Montana University System
administrators and regents will begin today with a work session
preceding the main session. Meetings will be conducted in various
rooms of the Student Union Building.
Official busineThe Academic and Student
Affairs committee is slated to work on a range of issues. Among
those of particular interest to MSU include authorization of
three centers based at MSU. The first is a National Science
Foundation Center for Learning and Teaching in the West. Based at
MSU, the center will work with The University of Montana. The
others include a Center for Entrepreneurship for the New West and
a Center for Research on Chronic Health Conditions in Rural
Dwellers, both based at MSU.
The Regents will also consider a proposal
for adding a minor in management of information technology, more
detailed degree offerings in biology, a post-master's program in
family nurse practitioner (FNP), a minor in international
business and a broadened division in MSU's Department of
Entomology.
The Administrative Budget Committee will
also deal with a variety of proposals. Among them are
authorizations to renovate a portion of Cooley Lab and AJM
Johnson Hall, as well as a re-roofing of the Brick Breeden
Fieldhouse dome.
The board will convene in full session
Thursday afternoon to discuss staff issues. A highlight of the
day will be a report from Commissioner Richard Crofts, as well as
reports from students, committees and the CEO of each campus.
The board will accept public input on
Montana University System Issues from 8:30-10 a.m. Friday in SUB
rooms 275-276. That morning the regents will also breakfast with
local business and civic regents and in the late morning will
listen to a report and discussion on the system's economic
development report.
Friday the board is slated to hear a
report on negative fund balances reported in the campuses
operating budgets.
Many of the regents will stay after the
meeting adjourns on Friday to watch the annual 'Cat-Griz football
game, which will kickoff at 12:05 p.m. Saturday. Traditionally,
the annual fall meeting of the Board of Regents takes place at
the campus that hosts the rivalry.
