01/17/2002 Bozeman--A
workshop that will train participants to survive hazardous
conditions while driving in winter weather will be conducted by
the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) housed at Montana
State University Wednesday, Jan. 16 at the Bozeman Holiday Inn.
The course will focus on preparing for the possibility of being
stranded in life-threatening weather. Equipment and clothing
needed to survive the cold, techniques of building a fire,
symptoms of hypothermia and carbon monoxide poisoning and their
treatment will be taught.
The workshop would benefit anyone exposed to extreme elements,
including public workers who are at risk for becoming trapped in
bad weather or who may chance upon stranded motorists and require
emergency skills.
Steve Jenkins, director of LTAP, will conduct the workshop.
Jenkins has been teaching winter survival skills in Western
states for more than 10 years. He has worked with law
enforcement, search and rescue, fire departments, tribal
governments and local agencies about safe practices in winter
operations. Jenkins has also used his winter survival skills. In
years of winter travel throughout the West, he has spent several
cold winter nights outdoors or stranded in a vehicle.
Cost of the all-day workshop is $30. For more information,
including registration information, contact the LTAP office,
994-6724.
