Kids in Liberty County seem more knowledgable about safety these days, observes Tanr Tempel, but that doesn't mean his work is over. Tanr, 17, of the Foothills 4-H Club, has spent the last six years as a representative for Farm Safety 4 Just Kids, an Iowa-based organization started by a woman whose son was killed in a farm accident.

In November, Tanr traveled to Dallas for a national conference where he led seminars on safety for kids and adults. It was a diverse mix of people, he said: "A lot of them didn't even know what a cow was!"

Back home Tanr stages demonstrations wherever safety lessons are neededschools, clubs, a Hutterite colony. He says the best advice he can give is to learn about safety and potential accidents: "It all happens so fast," he said. "The best thing you can do is be prepared."
