From the 1998-99 4-H Clover Project Selection Guide
Fergus County 4-H'ers saddled up for a good cause on June 6, 1998, as they held a trail ride to benefit St. Jude Children's Hospital. Twenty-eight riders completed the 10-mile trip into the Judith Mountains, raising $1400 for the cancer research center for children. MSU Extension specialist Mike Cavey also joined the ride and gave a special presentation during lunchtime, while the group set up and took down a teepee and learned how to throw spears using an atlatl (a prehistoric weapon launcher).
The 4-H'ers collected pledges and earned prizes such as sweatshirts, sportsbags and T-shirts for various levels. The top pledge-getter was Katie Jackson, who raised $190 for St. Jude's.
"The real prize, though, is the pride everyone can take in giving children a chance to live a normal life," said Val Wichman, who organized the event.
