Scholarships are readily available, but finding them and all the information you need to apply, can be daunting! What you will find on this page is a guide to scholarship information, with a suggestion to start in your community, moving to the state level, national searches via the internet and lastly, through Montana State University.

Community Level:

Your high school Guidance Counselor can be a terrific resource for local scholarship information. Civic groups (Chamber of Commerce, Business and Professional Women), public and private clubs (Rotary Club International, Optimists) and fraternal organizations (Eagles, B.P.O.E.) in your community often sponsor academic scholarships. Alumni and memorial scholarships may be available through your high school, as well.

State of Montana:

Merit-based, Merit-at-large, and Need-based scholarships are available through the Governors Best and Brightest Scholarship Program. One Merit Scholarship is available from each Montana high school and is awarded for academic excellence by a graduating senior. Merit-at-large awards are available to graduating high school seniors, current college students, students over the traditional age, as well as students who have been home-schooled. Students eligibility for Need-based scholarships is determined by the institutions financial aid office in conjunction with FAFSA. Montana University System Honor Scholarships are awarded according to a graduating high school seniors GPA ranking in their class, with 3.4 GPA, the minimum. The scholarship may be used at any of the states 2- or 4-year institutions. More information is available at www.scholarship.mt.gov.

Montana State University:

There are millions of dollars awarded every year in scholarships to students at Montana State University. Three broad categories encompass a variety of award options: Freshman, Transfer and Other Scholarships.

Freshman Scholarships:
There are state resident and non-resident awards, the Distinction Award for new non-resident freshmen and the Western Undergraduate Exchange or "WUE".

Transfer Scholarships:
The Resident Transfer Premier Scholarship and the Non-Resident Transfer Achievement Award.

Other Scholarship Programs:
The Presidential and Provost Scholarships offered in conjunction with the University Honors program. Scholarships are also offered through the university's colleges and individual departments. Audition/Portfolio Review Scholarships are available from the Music, Film & Photography and School of Art. National Merit Scholarships, Native American Scholarships, athletic scholarships, armed forces and the Yellow Ribbon Program and spring or summer semester scholarships for new students are all available at Montana State University.
