Advising Goals
- To provide the students with accurate help in
selecting degrees, minors, and courses in order to give them
a personalized program, as well as a program that meets all
of the requirements for graduation.
- To advise the students with respect to the type of jobs
for which they can realistically expect to be qualified
when they complete the electrical engineering (EE) program,
the electrical and electronic engineering technology (EEET)
program, or the computer engineering program.
- To do an accurate assessment of the capabilities of each
student and advise them for which of the above programs
they are most probably qualified or to advise them that
another area outside of the EE Department would perhaps
best suit their talents.
Advising Policy
Each student is assigned an advisor when he or she comes
into the department as an entering freshman or an entering
transfer student. The student is always free to ask for a
change of advisor for any reason, and such changes are
accomplished in a few minutes. The student is not asked for
the reason for the request for a change, it is simply done.
They can and often do ask for a specific faculty member.
Advising is required for any student that has requested a
graduation guarantee, but is presented to all other students
as being "highly recommended". Students do not try to
graduate from the electrical engineering department without
the help of their advisor, simply because the course
requirements are somewhat complex, and any substitution to
the printed set of required courses must be approved by the
certifying officer for the department. Advising is done as
an organized department function once each semester (e.g.
during pre-registration) and at any other time during the
semester as required by the individual student.
Recent Changes and Future Plans
- To Improve Quality of Advising
- The advising process in the electrical engineering
department has not undergone a major change since fall 1995,
since it is a proven process that works very well. We are,
however, constantly trying to improve the process,
specifically by leadership from the department head and the
certifying officer. We will also be instituting a procedure
starting in fall semester 1996, where each student will be
invited to submit an evaluation form in which the department
rather than a specific class or a specific instructor) is
the subject of evaluation. Several of the questions on the
evaluation form will be concerned with the student's
perception of his or her advising and how well it is being
done. Advising improvements such as the emphasis on keeping
an accurate and up to date advising record on each student
by the advisor has been moved up to being a top priority by
the department. The CO works closely with the department
head in order to bring problems in the quality of advising
to his attention. These specific problems are then placed
on the agenda of the bi-weekly faculty meetings, discussed
at the meeting, and action for correction of the problems
is initiated.
- To Improve Accessibility of Advisors
- The advisors in the electrical engineering department (the
entire faculty) are always available to the students at the
posted office hours for each individual faculty member. The
students are also encouraged to make appointments to see
their advisor on an "as needed" basis. Additional attention
to the advising process is being emphasized in the bi-weekly
faculty meetings as a necessary and important part of the
learning experience that we, as a faculty, are presenting to
the student.
