Advising Goals
- To help students move through their programs appropriately, with awareness of pre-requisites and course options.
- To choose courses, both within their major and for their general education, that match their goals.
- To make students aware of the options available to them, such as student exchanges or foreign study.
- To offer guidance in the selection of careers and professional schools.
Advising Policy
When students become English majors, they are assigned to
their faculty advisors. Advisees meet with their advisors at
least once every semester in order to discuss their programs
and obtain their personal data forms. Faculty members post
sign-up sheets on their doors to set appointments during
pre-registration and are willing to make appointments for
additional advising throughout the semester. English
Education majors also meet with a second advisor each term, a
specialist in English Education who ensures that students are
aware of issues and deadlines associated with their
certification.
Recent Changes and Future Plans
- To Improve Quality of Advising
- Since we feel the advising is good, we have made few changes.
We have moved student files to the English office so that a
student who has only a quick question may have it answered
immediately. We have offered advisors mini-workshops on the
SIS system. And we have asked all sophomores and juniors to
fill out student information forms so that we can readily
determine students who might be eligible for scholarships or
awards.
- To Improve Accessibility of Advisors
- This question presupposes that advisors are not sufficiently
accessible. That does not appear to be true: advisors are
already accessible.
