New MSU Undergraduate Courses

To add a new MSU "hard numbered" course, download a copy of the New Undergraduate Course Request form, which is available in WORD or PDF formats below.  Then, follow these steps:

  • Fill in the information on the front page of the form.  You can print the form and fill in the blanks in pen or add the information to the WORD document.  Be sure to attach the catalog description.
  • Create a document addressing all of the points on the second page of the form.
  • Obtain the necessary ORIGINAL signatures.
  • Deliver 14 copies (cover sheet, catalog description, plus responses) to the Provost's Office.
To add a new 280/480 course, download a copy of the 280/480 Course Request form, which is available in WORD or PDF formats below.  The 280/480 designations are designed for experimental or one-time courses.  If the course will be offered repeatedly (even if alternate years or “on demand”) you are encouraged to apply for a permanent course designation.  Only under special circumstances will departments be permitted to offer a course more than once as a 280/480.  There is no requirement that courses must first be offered as a 280/480 before applying for a permanent number.  To apply, follow these steps:
  • Fill in the information on the front page of the form.  You can print the form and fill in the blanks in pen or add the information to the WORD document.
  • Create a document addressing all of the points on the second page of the form.
  • Obtain the necessary ORIGINAL signatures.
  • Deliver a single copy (cover sheet plus responses) to the Provost's Office.
To change or delete a course, download and complete the appropriate form, which is available  in WORD or PDF format below.

To apply for CORE 2.0 designation, please begin by reviewing the CORE 2.0 website or calling Jeff Adams (x7835) to discuss your plans.  To make a formal application, follow these steps:

  • Find detailed instructions on applying for CORE 2.0 designation in the document linked below.
  • Complete the CORE 2.0 Cover Sheet (link below), obtain the necessary signatures (up to college level) and deliver, along with the proposal, to Montana Hall 212.  Note that the WORD version can be completed electronically and then printed.
  • If you are applying for CORE 2.0 designation for a new course, you will need to complete a new course application (process described above) AND a separate core application.  Please be sure to indicate on the new course application that core designation is being sought.  The two reviews can take place simultaneously.

If you have any questions, please call Jeff Adams (994-7835).
