Note-taking Policies and Procedures

PURPOSE: To ensure equal access to in-class information for qualified MSU students with disabilities.

POLICY: Students must provide required disability documentation to Disabled Student Services (DSS) that clearly supports the need for note-taking accommodations. Note-takers are solicited, in class, on a volunteer basis.

If the student receiving notes withdraws from class, he or she must inform the note-taker and DSS in writing within 24 hours.

If the student receiving notes has problems with the note-taker or with the notes, he or she must tell a staff member at DSS as soon as possible, so the problem can be corrected.

If no one volunteers as an in-class note-taker, or if the note-taker notifies the student in advance that he or she will be absent, the student receiving notes should contact the professor or DSS immediately.

NOTE: Students are typically required to attend class in order to receive class notes.

PROCEDURES:
  1. Show the course instructor your blue Disabled Student Services (DSS) certification card when requesting that the instructor announce your need for a volunteer note-taker. Also see: "Requesting Note Taking Services" and "Note Taking Policy."

  2. Ask your instructor to read the "Recruiting a Volunteer Note-Taker(s)" form to the class. The instructor should announce that the student who needs the assistance would be available immediately after class in the front of the room, or in another logical location, to meet with any volunteers.

  3. When meeting for the first time with the note-taker, you should exchange names and phone numbers. Also give each note-taker copies of the following forms: "Volunteer Sign-up sheet," "Introduction to Volunteer Note Taking," "Note Taking Policy," "How to be an Effective Note Taker," and "Suggestions for Note Takers." (available from DSS in a full packet).

The note-taker should be asked to submit the "Volunteer Sign-up sheet" to DSS staff. The form will provide staff with contact information and will serve to identify the student who is to receive the notes.

  4. Notes copied by DSS will be placed in your file for pick up. Please remember notes will not be copied unless DSS staff can identify the student who is receiving the notes.

  5. Arrange with your classmate for delivery and pick up of notes. You may want notes each day or perhaps only once each week. Just make certain that you and the note-taker both understand the arrangement.
