Re-entry Student Services

Of the more than 2,000 students at Montana State University-Bozeman over traditional age (25 or over), about 70 percent are undergraduates. Some are in the middle of a career and are returning to the university to strengthen their skills and credentials or to change career directions, while others have had their career in the home and now wish to develop the skills and knowledge necessary for a new career. Still others have returned simply to expand and enrich their lives.

If deciding to enroll at MSU-Bozeman for the first time or to re-enter after considerable time away from college, consider and be encouraged by the value of your experiences, maturity and motivation. Though some of your academic skills may be a bit rusty, these factors are extremely important to a successful university experience.

When re-entering formal education after an absence of several years, nontraditional students are encouraged to arrange a time to visit with personnel from Re-entry Student Services. Personnel in this office offer direction, support and pre-advising for nontraditional students and are eager to help you find answers to the following commonly asked questions.

  • How can I brush up my skills in reading, writing, math, note taking and studying?
  • How will I manage my time, with all the demands on me?
  • Will I feel strange taking classes with traditional age students?
  • How many courses should I take?
  • Will my old course work count?
  • Is coming back to school worth the sacrifice?
  • How can I discipline myself to study?
  • Will professors take me seriously?
  • Should I go full-time or part-time?
  • How will I take care of my children when I am in class or studying?
  • How can I make this a positive experience for my whole family?
  • How do I meet my financial obligations and housing needs while attending school?
