Welcome from La Grande Site!

Welcome from Jeanne Bowden:
Hi. I'm
Jeanne Bowden, the clinical coordinator in Eastern Oregon. I am Associate Dean for
Oregon Health Sciences University School of Nursing's eastern campus located at Eastern
Oregon University. My colleague, Ginny Elder, will be working with me on this
project.
La Grande is small community of about 12,000 residents located 262 miles
east of Portland and 174 miles west of Boise, Idaho. The town is located in the beautiful
Grande Ronde Valley, nestled between the Wallowa Mountains and the Elkhorn Ridge of the
Blue Mountains. Northeast Oregon is a beautiful place of adventure with recreational
opportunities for backpacking, hiking, fishing, camping, and swimming.
Agriculture and farming activities are of central importance to the Grande Ronde Valley.
There are about 680 farms in Union County. Approximately one-third of the farms produce
livestock and another third grow field crops. The final third are involved in farm
forestry, fruit production, or other types of agriculture. Our valley is famous for its
high quality production of several types of turf-grasses.
Timber is another primary industry in Union County. The Boise Cascade Corporation has a
major presence in the valley and operates mills in La Grande and Elgin. Other employers in
our community include retail trade (about 32,000 persons employed), the railroad (350
persons employed), tourism, transportation, communications, and medical services,
including a nationally acclaimed hospital.
Higher education plays a significant role in Union County with La Grande being home to
Eastern Oregon University, the only four-year institution east of the Oregon Cascades. As
a regional University, the catchment area for the Eastern Oregon University includes
greater than 40% of the State. Oregon's statewide telecommunications network allows us to
lead the way in distance education for students and citizens in our area.
We are pleased to welcome you to our community and are eager to play a role in this
exciting research study. We currently have 13 out of the 30 subjects
enrolled. There are 4 from La Grande, 3 from Baker City, 1 from Summer,
1 from Wallowa, 1 from Haines and 3 from Enterprise.
Best regards,
Jeanne Bowden, PhD, RN
