University College

The entire focus of University College fundraising is on scholarships. Students who have yet to declare a major (1400 in 2006), need financial assistance as much as declared majors. Undergraduate research and creative activity, interdisciplinary study, thematic research seminars, major/career exploration, and national student exchange are just a few of the many opportunities available to students, and we would like to expand these opportunities. Specific programs in University College include the University Honors Program, the Undergraduate Scholars Program, University Studies, Directed Interdisciplinary Studies and Liberal Studies. Our goal is to increase our endowment by $500,000 by 2009 to provide these needed funds directly to students.

Liberal Studies Degree

The Liberal Studies curriculum provides a general education degree designed specifically to meet the needs of students wanting to pursue a flexible cross-disciplinary educational program, which is not as prescriptive as traditional curricula. Some of the most exciting and innovative advances in human knowledge are occurring at the intersections of traditional academic disciplines, and the Liberal Studies degree provides curricular structure that allows students to explore these emerging areas. The intellectual skills provided by rigorous, cross-disciplinary studies are increasingly being recognized as the appropriate foundation for success in a broad range of careers and post-baccalaureate programs ranging from business and management to medicine.

Undergraduate Scholars Program (USP)

Your gift to the Undergraduate Scholars Program goes directly to students to support independent faculty-mentored research and creative projects. USP takes learning beyond the classroom by providing research stipends of up to $1500 that enable students to pursue scientific discovery, technical innovation and creative expression using the same methods and tools as professionals in their field. Students take the lead at all stages – from proposal, through implementation, to presentation of final results. Professional standards are ensured by rigorous review of proposals and close collaboration between students and faculty mentors. Students who rise to the challenge of this rigorous program have a head start in graduate school or the professional workplace and several USP alums have been awarded prestigious scholarships for further study including the Goldwater and Rhodes. Your gift will help to ensure that we can continue to fund all worthy proposals and as many students as possible can participate fully in the research and creative work for which MSU is renowned.

The University Studies Program

The mission of the University Studies Program is to encourage and assist students in the exploration of their interests, the pursuit of their goals, and the development of their intellectual knowledge and skills in the belief that every student can reach their full potential. The mission and the goals of the University Studies Program are achieved through the delivery of professional academic advising and the University Studies Freshman Seminar. One third of the entering freshman class enrolls in University Studies.
