Deadline: March 24, 2008

In 2004 we established a new faculty award to be given annually to recognize mentoring in undergraduate research/creativity. We are now soliciting nominations for 2008. Attached is additional information about the award and the selection process. We encourage you to distribute this information to all interested faculty and staff. All nominations should be submitted to the appropriate Dean who will then forward one nomination from the college (two from Letters and Science) to the Provost’s Office by March 24. If you have additional questions, please contact the Provost’s Office.

In recognition of the importance of undergraduate research/creativity, Montana State University-Bozeman has established the Provost’s Award for Undergraduate Research/Creativity Mentoring. Sponsored jointly by the Provost and the Vice President for Research, Creativity and Technology Transfer, this award will be given annually to a faculty member who engages undergraduate students in this valuable learning process. The following guidelines apply to the nomination and selection process:

  1. Each Dean may nominate one faculty member from the College. The Dean of Letters and Science may nominate two candidates: one from Letters and one from Science. Nomination materials should include a current curriculum vita and a letter of endorsement (not to exceed two pages) from the Dean which highlights the nominee’s contribution to undergraduate research/creativity mentoring.
  2. All faculty are eligible.
  3. Selection criteria will include:
    • number of undergraduate students mentored
    • hours of involvement
    • record of continued involvement with undergraduate research/creativity
    • recognition of student work through publication, awards, exhibitions, conference presentations, and patents
    • potential for contribution to research/creativity component of Core 2.0
  4. Selection committee will consist of:
    • Provost
    • Vice President for Research, Creativity and Technology Transfer
    • Senior Vice Provost
    • Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
  5. The recipient of this award will receive a $2,000 cash award and a plaque which will be presented at the Honors Banquet. In addition, the recipient will be recognized at MSU’s Commencement ceremony.
