Grantwriting Seminar
John Hurt, program director at the National Science Foundation's Partnerships for Innovation,
will be on campus Feb. 7-8 to give a grantwriting workshop. Sessions will be divided into two- to
three-hour time periods, allowing faculty to attend only the sessions they most desire. More
information will be forthcoming soon.
New IDC rate
MSU has negotiated a new indirect cost rate for research proposals. The new rate will be 41.5
percent (up from the previous rate of 40 percent) and is effective Jan. 1, 2001. Principle
investigators submitting proposals should begin using this new rate immediately.
The other change that affects IDC calculation is that our capitalization threshold for equipment
has been raised from $1,000 to $5,000 so that we are consistent with both the state and federal
government in our definition of what constitutes equipment.

FastLane and PDF
PDF format will soon no longer be necessary for FastLane proposals. The National Science Foundation
is eliminating the need to convert source documents into PDF format for proposal components
submitted within FastLane. New upload instructions and a list of supported file formats can be
found at the individual interfaces where one begins the upload process. PDF documents will continue
to be accepted.
MSU's Information Technology Center now has a site license for the full Adobe Acrobat 4.0 software
that is used to create PDF files on a PC or Macintosh. The cost is $52. Call Betty Scollard,
ITC Computer Store, at 994-2900 to arrange to pick up the CD.

We are compiling a list of MSU facilities and services that are available to off-campus users.
