NSF-EPSCoR State Meeting
Montana will host the 7th Annual National Science Foundation-EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate
Competitive Research) state conference Oct. 19 at the Gallatin Gateway Inn. This year's agenda includes
a look at the past, present and future of the state and federal EPSCoR program. The goal is to recognize
what the state has done since the inception of EPSCoR 20 years ago and, in light of those endeavors,
focus on where and what the state wants to accomplish over the next five to ten years. Representatives
of Montana state government as well as university administrators and faculty will be included in the
discussions. Speakers from the federal government include Jim Hoehn (NSF-EPSCoR Office), John Hurt (NSF
Integrative Activities), and Duncan Moore (Office of Science & Technology Programs).
A celebratory dinner will be held that evening in honor of Gary Strobel's twenty years of service as
director of the EPSCoR program in Montana.
NSF Outreach Day
On Friday, Oct. 20, several National Science Foundation officers will be speaking to MSU faculty as
part of the NSF Outreach Program. This program enables NSF program officers to visit researchers in
the EPSCoR states to help improve the quality of science and engineering research done there.
Speakers visiting MSU are Jane Harrington (EPSCoR co-funding, NSF grant writing, FastLane), John
Hurt (Partnerships for Innovation program / NSF Integrative Activities), and Machi Dilworth (programs
in the Division of Biological Infrastructure). Presentations will be held hourly beginning at 8:30 a.m.
in 325 LJohnson Hall. Coffee and refreshments will be available.
There also will be an opportunity for faculty to meet individually with the NSF speakers. Please

The NSF Outreach Day will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about NSF funding opportunities,
electronic submission requirements and related issues directly from visiting agency officials. Please
