Strout 2000 Lecturer The annual Shannon Weatherly Lecture Series brings a dear friend back to the MSU campus. We are excited to have Jan Strout, first director of the Women's Center, as our lecturer this year. She will be speaking on Thursday, October 12, 2000 in SUB Ballroom B at 7:30 p.m. Friends of the Women's Center and supporters of the Bozeman women's community remember Jan with fondness for her enthusiasm and energy. Jan served as director for the center (then called the Women's Resource Center) from 1982 to 1987. During her tenure the Geraldine Fenn Memorial Library (housed in the Women's Center) was created, the Shannon Weatherly Lecture Series was created, and a very popular annual fundraising event, "The Pasta Extremaganza" was held. Jan was greatly successful at creating a network of supporters for the Women's Center that we still enjoy today. On campus, Jan reached out to marginalized women. She wrote grants to put informational pamphlets together for women in agriculture and Native American women. In 1987 she left to lead the Princeton Women's Center but came back frequently to visit and share new ideas and inspire the directors who followed. Jan's skill in fundraising led to several positions in development and grantmaking. After leaving Princeton where she was the Director of the Women's Center for six years, Jan took a job with the Funding Exchange in New York City as a program officer. She was responsible for grantmaking and education in this progressive national foundation. Jan has consistently remained active in a wide variety of causes. Her broad range of work on various boards and committees combined with her extensive travel, research and career choices make hers quite an interesting story. Currently, Jan is the Executive Director of A Territory Resource Foundation in Seattle, Washington. ATR is a public foundation that supports activist, community-based organizations working for social, economic and environmental justice across the Northwest in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. As this year's Shannon Weatherly Lecturer, Jan will reflect upon her years of activism and career transformations in a talk titled, "Making a Difference: Women's Leadership and Activism." Jan states that "Supporting and strengthening progressive social change activism and organizing locally and globally to achieve human dignity and economic, environmental and social justice has been the basis of my life's work." Please join us for this homecoming and welcome back a woman who made a tremendous difference on this campus, Jan Strout. What's Inside: About the Shannon Weatherly Lecture Series, page 1 Thank you, dear contributors, page 2 Greetings from Betsy, our director, page 3 Election tidbits, page 3 Sack Lunch Seminars, page 4 QMSU, page 5 About the Shannon Weatherly Lecture Series The friends and family of Shannon Weatherly founded the Shannon Weatherly Memorial Lecture Series in 1985. The series features feminist scholars and activists who, through their purposeful and strong lives, reflect the life of Shannon. Shannon was an extraordinary young woman who was known for her wide range of interests and dedication to learning. She studied at the University of Montana and Iliff Seminary in Denver, Colorado. Her tragic and sudden death in 1982 left her family and friends in a state of shock. At the time Shannon worked at the Renne Library on the MSU campus and served on the board of advisors for the Women's Center. Each fall the Women's Center celebrates Shannon's life with this special event. The Lecture Series has brought in an impressive array of feminist speakers, including Joanna Macy, cartoonist Nicole Hollander, singer/songwriter Holly Near, educator/ policy-maker Bernice Sandler, author/activist Dianna Russell, author Mary Clearman Blew, and anti violence activist Stacey Kabat. We would like to thank Shannon's friends and family for the endowment that allows us to sponsor this lecture series. This year, we are very pleased to welcome back founding director Jan Strout who helped implement the Shannon Weatherly Lecture Series back in 1985. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The Women's Center would like to thank all the following supporters for their donations during our last fundraiser in May 2000. We are extremely grateful to have this continued support. It's hard to believe that I am actually beginning my tenth year as the director of the Women's Center! The semester is beginning with a bang, but I hope each of you had a terrific summer and are well rested and ready for the school year. I would first like to welcome back two returning employees, Nicole Osborne and Shelly Videon. I'd like to send a fond farewell to Tracy Balcom who had to leave us because of academic commitments. Welcome to new staff member Tiffany Andersen who will be starting work here this week. Tiffany is finishing up her degree in Political Science and Women's Studies in May, but I am happy that we have her for the year. I am truly grateful to have this wonderful staff and appreciate all the work and time they put in here at the Women's Center. We are looking forward to this year's Shannon Weatherly Lecture and will be bringing founding director Jan Strout back to Bozeman. Jan will discuss women's roles in activism and leadership and her career path since she left MSU in 1987. She is a dynamic and enthusiastic leader and will hopefully inspire each and every one of us to become activists, especially during the upcoming elections. Every year, two years, four years, we are faced with choices. We can choose to vote, we can choose not to vote; we can choose whom to vote for. For years after I turned eighteen, I chose not to vote, I thought it was a waste of time; who really cares, politicians are all the same. When the 1984 presidential race between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale presented itself, I had to exercise my right to vote. It's not that I liked Mondale so much, but I knew my mother would turn over in her grave if I didn't get out there and vote against Ronald Reagan. I still clearly recalled the year Nixon had won, when she stayed in bed for days, inconsolable. Of course I couldn't understand her grief at the time, but came to understand it while Reagan was president and the assault on women's rights began in earnest. Decide which issues are most important to you and research the candidates. I have come to realize that voting a straight party line is not always the answer. There are democrats who don't see the importance in fighting for women's rights while certain republicans (and don't ask why, I still haven't figured this one out!) are strong proponents of women's issues. Also, be sure to take local elections seriously and research those candidates' views on the issues as well. These elections do make a difference and often times, real change is more feasible on the local level. Remember, Montana is small enough that we can often speak to our candidates in person; if you are unsure about their views on a certain issue, feel free to call or e-mail them and get straight answers. So, investigate your choices and get out there and vote on Tuesday, November 7th! MSU's VOICE Center recognizes this national event with a series of activities designed to create an awareness of domestic violence issues as well as offer support for healthy relationships. Look for information tables in the SUB every Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Information available will display brochures and statistics and will be staffed by VOICE Center advocates to answer questions. On October 5 in the Northwest Lounge of the SUB from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. we will show the Academy Award winning film, Defending Our Lives. This powerful film shares the stories of women incarcerated for defending themselves against batterers. VOICE Center advocates will be marching in the MSU Homecoming Parade on October 7. A noon vigil will be held on the MSU campus on the Centennial Mall October 26. This vigil will provide an opportunity for people to speak out about domestic violence and how it affects us as communities and as individuals. Be sure to look for informational table tents in residence halls and in the SUB, listing dates and details about planned events. The VOICE Center will host an Open House along with the Women's Center on November 1st. Further details will be posted around campus, in the Exponent and through mailings. We hope you can join us. The VOICE Center is a program of Student Health Services that provides free and confidential support, advocacy, and referral services to survivors of sexual and domestic violence. We provide many opportunities for student involvement including advocacy training, volunteer work and internships. Call us at our 24-hour phone line, 994-7069. Or visit with Director Christian Sarver at the VOICE Center in 14 Hamilton Hall. Q-MSU: What's Happening Welcome back everyone. Q-MSU was busy this summer getting ready for Fall semester. We are planning a Queer Day on Saturday, September 30th, which will start with a barbecue at Lindley Park at 2:00 p.m. This is open to everyone, free of charge and will feature various competitive events including "Drag Races." Think field day with a gay twist. The picnic will be followed by a drag show, performed by a group coming to us all the way from Missoula, at the Emerson Cultural Center at 7:00 in the gymnasium. The evening will be topped off with a dance which will differ a bit from ones in the past. Instead of a hired DJ, Q-MSU members will be DJing and spinning some of their favorite tunes providing them with an opportunity to show their stuff! We also are busy making plans for National Coming Out Day on October 11th. We'd like to build a closet on the campus mall, signifying the celebration and struggles of coming out of the closet. We will also be presenting a Sack Lunch Seminar on October 11th discussing what Q-MSU is and why coming out and being an ally are so important. This is sponsored by the Women's Center and will be held from noon until 1:00 p.m. in SUB room 275. Q-MSU is a campus based student organization for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender students, staff and community members in Bozeman. Parents, friends, and allies are also welcome at our meetings and events. Meetings are held each Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM in the Strand Union Building in room 106E. Meetings are confidential.
