This lecture series
is presented by the Women's Center in honor
of MSU alum and Women's Center founding board
member, Shannon Weatherly. Shannon's
compassion and involvement in the community
continues to be an inspiration to others.
As her mother has said about Shannon,"She
felt a great responsibility, not only to her
immediate community of friends, associates,
and her college, but to the larger community
which is humankind." Shannon's activities
incorporated her education in areas including
theology, history, sociology and psychology
which propelled the ideals of feminist studies.
Shannon
was tragically killed in 1982 while camping
near Gardiner, MT. She was shot by a hunter
who mistook her tent for a bear.
An
endowment was created by Shannon's family
and friends to bring nationally known feminist
speakers to the campus. These lectures are
presented annually and are free and open to
the public. Past presenters have included
singer/songwriter Holly Near, psychologist
and author Charlotte Davis Kasl, activist
and academy award winning film maker Stacy
Kabat, comedian Maria Falzone, cartoonist
Nicole Hollander, feminist religious scholar,
Dr. Diana Eck, and author Dr. Diana Russell.
The
2012 event is titled:
LIVING
THE GREEN DOT
Join
us for an evening with:
Dorothy Edwards, creator of the Green Dot
Violence Prevention Strategy
Wednesday, April 18, 2012
TheProcrastinator
Theater
of
the Strand Union Building at MSU
Our
speaker this year will be Dr. Dorothy
J. Edwards, author of the Green Dot Violence
Prevention Strategy. Dorothy holds
a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Texas
Woman's University. Prior to her current position,
serving as the Executive Director of Green
Dot, etc., a center dedicated to effective
intervention and prevention of power-based
personal violence, Dr. Edwards served for
five years as the founding Director of the
University of Kentucky Violence Intervention
and Prevention Center. She has worked in both
counseling and teaching capacities in higher
education addressing sexual assault and relationship
violence. With a specialty in primary prevention,
she provides training and consultation in
the areas of power-based personal violence,
organizational capacity building, program
implementation, strategic planning, and community
mobilization. Dr. Edwards is currently working
with government entities, state coalitions,
military, non-profits, community organizations,
high schools and colleges from around the
globe.
This
presentation will provide an overview of the
Green Dot Community Mobilization Strategy
and inspire participants to see their role
in prevention. Green Dot harnesses the
power of individual choices to shift our current
cultural norms (from bystander inaction to
a community that is actively and visibly intolerant
of violence). Dr. Edwards will provide
an overview of the role all community members
have in promoting community safety and will
instill hope that together we can markedly
reduce current rates of power-based personal
violence. You will leave this presentation
with a renewed hope and a commitment to do
your part to end violence one “green dot”
at a time.
This
event is co-sponsored by the MSU VOICE Center.
Join us @ 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday,
April 18 th in the Strand Union Procrastinator
Theater on the MSU campus for Dorothy's
presentation as well as a reception (and an

in the SUB Leigh Lounge.
