CEPAC Survey of Classified Staff

September/October, 2003

Update, 6 November 2003

The report on the outcome of the Fee Waiver Survey prepared for CEPAC’s October 8 meeting, has been displayed on the CEPAC web site since October 8.  A letter detailing the outcome, along with the report and survey responses themselves, was sent to President Gamble on October 13.  Subsequently, additional responses have been received and the report therefore requires this update:

Summary of Responses:  One hundred and forty five people responded to the survey (14.5% of the potential total).  94% had some previous knowledge of the tuition fee waver benefit, and 43% had utilized it.  Half (51%) had experienced no restriction against their potential use of the waiver, and several said they would (37%), or might (27%), take classes in the future.  It appeared that few respondents knew all the facts about the waiver.

Issues Arising from the Responses:  An announcement was made, on the MSU classified staff listserv, and a hard copy version was posted for staff members not using email services. Individual responses were sent to respondents who raised specific questions. An announcement was made in the October 20th edition of the Staff Bulletin. Several people expressed gratitude for CEPAC’s efforts and individual responses, and indicated an enthusiasm for attending future meetings.

Electronic Communication:  The CEPAC web site has been reconfigured to make access to current issues, and associated links, more simply attained.  Sara France has been authorized to send email on the MSU classified staff listserv.  Announcements coming direct from the CEPAC Secretary simplify communications and appear less confusing to recipients.

Conclusion:  The dominant themes communicated by the survey respondents were that they appreciate the fee waiver as a significant benefit, but would like it to:

i.                     be transferable to family members

ii.                   be available to part-time staff, perhaps on a pro-rated basis

iii.                  include Extended Studies/Continuing Education courses.
