We've created this helpful guide to see if your degree/background qualifies you for the LAC Certificate Program.

1. Baccalaureate in RELATED field.
2. Baccalaureate in NON-Related field.
3. Masters Degree in Counseling.


1. Baccalaureate Applicant Procedures (Related Degree):
If you have a bachelor’s degree in: alcohol and drug studies, psychology, sociology, social work, counseling or a related field from an accredited college or university that includes the following coursework:

  • Six semester credits (90 clock hours) in human behavior, sociology, psychology, or a similar emphasis;
  • Three semester credits (45 clock hours) in psychopathology or abnormal behavior;
  • Six semester credits (90) clock hours) of group counseling;
  • Three semester credits (45 clock hours) of theories of counseling;

You need an additional 18 semester credits (270 clock hours) in chemical dependency/addiction coursework. Those credits/hours must be fulfilled in the following areas:

  • Addiction Assessment (60 hours)
  • Addiction Counseling (90 hours)
  • Pharmacology (30 hours)
  • Ethics for Addiction Counselors(15 hours)
  • Alcohol and Drug Studies (30 hours)
  • Addiction Treatment Planning & Documentation (30 hours)
  • Multi-Cultural Competency (15 hours)

The MSU LAC Online Certificate Program Offers 12 semester credits (150 clock hours) of that required coursework in the following areas:

  • Addiction Assessment (15 hours) offered as part of:
    • LAC 50x Assessment, Treatment Planning, & Ethics of Addiction
  • Addiction Counseling (45 hours) offered as:
    • LAC 501 Chemical Dependency Counseling
  • Pharmacology (45 hours) offered as:
    • LAC 502 Psychopharmacology & Addictions
  • Ethics for Addiction Counselors(15 hours) offered as part of:
    • LAC 50x Assessment, Treatment Planning, & Ethics of Addiction
  • Addiction Treatment Planning & Documentation (15 hours) offered as part of:
    • LAC 50x Assessment, Treatment Planning, & Ethics of Addiction

You will still need the additional courses or supplemental training to fulfill the coursework requirements for the Licensed Addiction Counseling credential. Additional courses taken as part of the baccalaureate degree or taken post-degree may count toward your credentialing.

3. Master’s in Counseling Degree Applicant Procedures:

If you have a master’s degree in counseling from a CACREP accredited or equivalent program, you will most likely have met all of the general education coursework requirements and many of the specific coursework requirements for the Licensed Addiction Counseling (LAC) credential.*
General Education Requirements:

  • Six semester credits (90 clock hours) in human behavior, sociology, psychology, or a similar emphasis;
  • Three semester credits (45 clock hours) in psychopathology or abnormal behavior
  • Six semester credits (90) clock hours) of group counseling;
  • Three semester credits (45 clock hours) of theories of counseling.

Specific Coursework Requirements:

  • Addiction Assessment (60 hours/4 credits)
  • Addiction Counseling (90 hours/6 credits)
  • Pharmacology (30 hours/2credits)
  • Ethics for Addiction Counselors(15 hours/1 credit)
  • Alcohol & Drug Studies (30 hours/2 credits)
  • Addiction Treatment Planning & Documentation (30 hours/2 credits)
  • Multi-Cultural Competency (15 hours/1 credit)

CACREP/equivalent content that may be applied toward Specific Coursework Requirements LAC credentialing:

  • Addiction Assessment: Conceptualization and Diagnosis of Mental Disorders (DSM course)
     Meets up to 45 hours
  • Addiction Counseling: Counseling Practicum, Counseling Internship;  Meets up to 45 hours
  • Alcohol & Drug Studies: Graduate level alcohol and drug studies course; Meets 30-45 hours
  • Addiction Treatment Planning & Documentation - Appraisal/Testing Course;  Meets up to 15 hours
  • Multi-Cultural Competency –Multicultural Counseling; Meets up to 15 hours

Montana State University Online Licensed Addiction Counseling Courses. The following courses supplement coursework taken in CACREP/equivalent counseling programs to meet LAC coursework requirements.

  • Addiction Assessment (15 hours) offered as part of: LAC 50x Assessment, Treatment Planning, & Ethics of Addiction
  • Addiction Counseling (45 hours) offered as: LAC 501 Chemical Dependency Counseling
  • Pharmacology (45 hours) offered as: LAC 502 Psychopharmacology & Addictions
  • Ethics for Addiction Counselors(15 hours) offered as part of: LAC 50x Assessment, Treatment Planning, & Ethics of Addiction
  • Addiction Treatment Planning & Documentation (15 hours) offered as part of: LAC 50x Assessment, Treatment Planning, & Ethics of Addiction

* Please note that in addition to coursework requirements, 1000 supervised clinical hours are required before applicants may apply to sit for the licensing exam.
