          SCHOOL BACKGROUND

Hays/Lodge Pole School (HLP) is located at the heart of the Fort Belknap Reservation and is the only K-12 public school that is located on the reservatiFort Belknap Mapon. The Fort Belknap Reservation is located in rural north central Montana and is home to more than three thousand members of the Gros Ventre and Assiniboine Tribes as well as an additional four thousand members living off the reservation . Hays/Lodge Pole is isolated from any major city or town of notable size. The nearest population center is Havre, Montana (11,000 people) which is located 86 miles from Hays/Lodge Pole School. Currently at HLP, 99% of the student body is of Native American decent. The town of Hays is mainly residential with a post office, the school, two small convenience stores/gas stations, and a community center. The town of Lodge Pole is identical in businesses and centers, but lacks a post office. These two communities and their children make up the student population of Hays/Lodge Pole Schools.
