"The Essential Guide to Rocky Mountain Mushroooms by Habitat" is a different kind of mushroom book in which mushrooms are arranged by habitat zone. This ecology centered approach places each species among surrounding flora and fauna and provides a trove of fascinating insights on how these charismatic fungi interact with the greater living world. It also allows for easier access to identification of certain species expected in these habitats. The book is for anyone curious about the mushrooms, including naturalists, botanists, forest managers, researchers, teachers, as well as beginning and experienced mushroomers. Twelve 'habitats' are covered starting with the wide open prairies and arid shrublands, moving up through the cottonwood riparian, towards golden aspen forests, up through tiers of conifer forests, over burned land, around snowbanks and finally ending in the glorious alpine above treeline. Edible, interesting, and characteristic fungi are included on the myco-tour. The book is available at Country Bookshelf for $29.95 in softcover, with lots of full-color photographs. Cathy will give a short introduction on 'the idea' of the book and how to use it, followed by a signing event and a chance to meet the author.
