The Honors College is proud to host a presentation by Dr. Sarah Shannon, Dean of the College of Nursing, entitled "Communication in healthcare: Ethics, Education and Research."
Research has shown that patients and families report valuing their healthcare clinicians' communication skills even more highly than they value their technical skills. Healthcare encounters that are judged to be brusque, disrespectful or to lack empathy erode patient trust so clinicians are admonished to exhibit compassion. Yet, what are caring communication techniques? How do we teach effective communication skills to healthcare clinicians? In particular, how can we prepare clinicians to manage ethically-charged communication events with patients, families or colleagues? Dr. Shannon has spent her career exploring, teaching and practicing communication around healthcare ethics, particularly end-of-life decisions in the intensive care setting, disclosure of medical errors and interprofessional conflict.
