- Thursday, August 23, 2018 from 3:00pm to 4:00pm
BOZEMAN -- A master class with Michael Sandel, hosted by the MSU Leadership Institute and Honors College, will take place prior to his convocation keynote presentation on August 23rd and will provide MSU students with a chance to ask the award-winning author and political philosopher powerful questions in a smaller setting about his career and bestselling book, “Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do?”.
Applications are now open for the 2018 Convocation Master Class with world-renowned author and political philosopher, Michael Sandel. The MSU Leadership Institute, in partnership with the MSU Honors College, will be offering students the opportunity to interact with Sandel in a smaller, more personalized setting to ask thoughtful questions and receive his powerful insights on difficult topics. Participants are asked to read his novel “Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do?” in preparation for the event on August 23rd. All students are welcome and encouraged to apply by 5:00pm on August 17th. The application can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Sandel2018.
Sandel specializes in exploring moral dilemmas within justice, ethics, and democracy by presenting relevant and relatable situations and creates spaces for students to engage in moral-reasoned discussion and dialogue. The Master Class will provide a platform for students to listen deeply and think critically about current events and difficult subjects with guidance from Sandel and fellow students. Madison Tandberg, a Student Associate of the MSU Leadership Institute who will be facilitating the class, says the Master Class “will empower students to embody Sandel’s message in their thoughts and actions in their time at MSU and beyond -- choosing to do what is right for them individually, for their peers, and for the world."
Sandel’s award-winning books have been translated to 27 different languages, and his impact has been felt around the globe. The models used in his courses emulate the Socratic model, and he has subsequently introduced discussion-based learning to areas all over the world.
Following the Master Class, Sandel will deliver his convocation lecture “What IS the Right Thing to Do?” to the incoming class of 2022 and the surrounding community in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse at 7:30pm. His presentation will highlight the nature associated with moral justice and the difficulty with defining “right” and “wrong.”
Michael Sandel’s master class at MSU is sponsored by the MSU Office of the President and the Office of the Provost. The MSU Honors College, ASMSU, and the MSU Leadership Institute have provided additional sponsorship for the event.
