DESCRIPTION:ECE grad student Ethan Hoerr will present an informal public te
chnical seminar about “Transfer Entropy” noon-1PM on Friday\, February 14\
, 2020\, in the ECE Conference Room (608 Cobleigh Hall).\nThe topic is rel
evant to Ethan’s doctoral research work. All interested students and facu
lty are welcome to attend!\nAbstract:\nIn 1948\, Claude Shannon’s article
A Mathematical Theory of Communication introduced entropy as a measure of
information and birthed information theory as a field of study. Since then
\, other useful information theoretic measures have built upon Shannon’s f
oundation\, including mutual information and transfer entropy. As an appli
cation of entropy\, mutual information measures the amount of information
shared by two random processes\, while transfer entropy can discern the fl
ow of the shared information from one process to the other. This technical
seminar will review the fundamental information theory concepts and discu
ss the application of transfer entropy for estimating the memory extent of
a single-input\, single-output system.
