Web content managers: today is the day.

From today onward you are responsible having taken our web accessibility training and ensuring that all new web content you create representing Montana State University is accessible.

We will begin to remove CMS editing access from all user accounts who have not yet completed the Creating Accessible MSU Web Content (or CMS 115). Note that your website(s) will be unaffected and continue to operate normally, but users without the training will lose the ability to make any edits.

What we expect of you from today

  1. You have taken the CMS 115 web accessibility training course.
  2. You can create accessible content on your sites.
  3. When dealing with new documents, you convert the documents to a web page or use accessible documents.

Haven't taken the CMS 115 training yet?

It should take about 60 minutes of your time.

If you've taken the training already, thank you! We sincerely appreciate it.

What you do not need to do right now

  • You do not need to remediate existing content your website on your own. Our team of developers will assist remediation of all websites.
  • You do not need to fix all of your existing documents right now. You can begin removing unnecessary documents, this will help later.
  • You do not need to remediate existing content that was created or published before June 1, 2014. This is "legacy content."
Only if an accessible version of the content is requested by a visitor does legacy content need to be brought up to compliance.

What we are doing to help

We have been working on the remediation of regular errors across the web domain since November, 2018.

We will assist you by

  • performing a one-time error remediation on your entire website,
  • assisting with the remediation of documents later this year, and
  • working with you early next year to remediate navigation.

Once the complete errors + documents remediation on your site is complete, you will be responsible for keeping your site accessible.

Why we require you to take this course

Part of our plan to comply with our legal requirements for web accessibility standards is for all web content managers to have taken accessibility training by March 1.

MSU entered into a voluntary agreement with the Office for Civil Rights in May of 2018 and the University Council passed a Web Accessibility Policy in February of 2019.

Take the course: Creating Accessible MSU Web Content (or CMS 115)
