Nicaragua: Cultural Immersion

Program Description:
Learn Spanish and Volunteer

This summer program provides an integrative and cultural experience for MSU students looking to advance their Spanish skills and immerse in a foreign culture. During the six weeks in the beautiful town of León, students actively integrate learning, discovery, and engagement. Individual instruction of Spanish means that each student continues to progress in his/her language skills according to his/her needs. Living with a Nicaraguan family enhances students’ cultural awareness and gives them the opportunity to practice their Spanish in a real life situation. In addition, students have the option of volunteering at a youth center that helps underprivileged local children stay in school. MSU students can help with homework, teach English, or play and do other interactive activities.

Students learn one-on-one Spanish (2 hours/day) at a language school and volunteer (2 hours/day) Monday through Thursday. Students may choose to only take Spanish and not volunteer. In that case they would take 4 hours of Spanish per day.

León is considered the intellectual capital of the country and is home to most universities. Because the area lacks the infrastructure that attracts tourism, MSU students maximize their immersion in Nicaraguan culture. León is about one hour away from the capital Managua and about 30 minutes from the Pacific Ocean.

Students are free to explore the country during the three-day weekends or to stay in town and surrounding area, where the beach and nearby volcanoes are always an attractive option. For the weekend excursion included in the cost of the program the group travels to the beautiful green mountainous coffee region in Matagalpa, about two hours from León.
