4-H ACTIVITY UPDATE

Keep Calm, it’s Almost Fair Week!

I hope everyone is having a good summer so far.  It sure has flown by in a hurry!  Please take time to read all the way through the newsletter, check your food booth shifts, and call with questions.  Keep an eye out for mail from the Extension Office, as we will be mailing your exhibitor packets next week.  If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to call.

JBC FAIR SET-UP, TAKE DOWN
& FOOD BOOTH SCHEDULES

Please be sure to check on the schedules included in this newsletter for your shifts for set-up, take down and food booth.  All members must participate in either set-up or take down and work a food booth shift. If you need to switch shifts, you are responsible for finding a replacement.  Be sure to check with your leaders in case of changes to safety protocols during this time.

FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER & EVENT CANCELED

The Friday Night Dinner and Event on August 7, 2020 has been canceled. The food booth will be open for regular menu ordering. This will not affect the food booth schedule.

CLUB MEETINGS

No club  meetings for the month of August! Enjoy the fair!

PROJECT & RECORD BOOKS

Another 4-H year almost complete! Please make sure your Record Books are up to date before interview day if you’re attending the fair.  Project books if complete for the year are eligible for a ribbon at interview day.  September 1, 2020 is the deadline to have your Record Books into your leaders for completion of the 4-H Year

MT STATE 4-H WORKING RANCH HORSE FINALS

The State Ranch Horse Show is scheduled for August 29-30 in Vaughn at the 406 Arena.  More details will follow.

4-H STATE HORSE SHOW

4-H State Horse Show is taking place September 18-20, 2020 at the Heart K Arena in Livingston, MT. Registration will open soon. Event rules are posted along with more information on the Montana 4-H State Horse Show event page.

MAKE IT WITH WOOL CONTEST

Leave time for the Montana Make It With Wool contests this fall. District contests usually take place in October and November of the year followed by state and National. Check out the flyer in this newsletter!

INTERVIEW DAY

This  years Interview Day will be different. All the member packets will be mailed out prior to Interview Day. Please attach all entry cards PRIOR to arriving for Interviews. ENTER gym using west doors and EXIT using east doors. Masks are encouraged but not mandatory at this time. Social distancing will be observed. Please use hand sanitizer and stay with-in your club’s seating and/or Interview Judges’ area.

Tips for Interview Judging

¨ Arrive at your interview early.

¨ Dress nicely for the interview.

¨ Greet your judge warmly with a handshake.

¨ Be ready to discuss positive outcomes of your     project, as well as areas that didn’t turn out as well as you expected.

¨ Prepare for your interview by considering what you learned, and what you would do different.

Some questions you may be asked:

¨ Why did you choose this project?

¨ What did you enjoy most? What was the most difficult?

¨ What did you learn from the problems you encountered? What will you do differently?

¨ Who helped you with the project?

¨ What new things did you learn?

¨ How will you apply what you’ve learned?

¨ Do you plan to continue the project next year?

Livestock interviewers may ask questions appropriate to your level, about:

¨ Feed records

¨ Break even price

¨ Animal health and care, medications

¨ Animal knowledge about breeds, anatomy

¨ Feed knowledge

¨ Meat products

¨ Marketing

This list doesn’t include every question you may be asked by your interviewer, but is meant to give you an idea about areas you should be ready to discuss.
