How to register for this event

We originally posted this as just one event in Scilympiad, but it is actually TWO: one for the Writer, and one for the Doer.

You will see these events in Scilympiad as:

  • Write It Do It-Writer (This event is the first 25 minutes of the time block)
  • Write It Do It-Doer (This event is the second 25 minutes of the time block)
  • Coaches must enroll their Writer in the Writer event and their Doer in the Doer event
  • The two participants are synched together through their team number, but otherwise the two events do not overlap. The system will automatically close the Writer's window at the end of 25 minutes and transfer their written instructions to the Doer.

Materials required

  • One letter size (8.5 x 11 inches) white piece of paper
  • One writing utensil in each of the following colors
    • Black
    • Red
    • Green
    • Blue
  • One 12 inch/30 centimeter ruler
  • The "doer" must have a smartphone/computer that can take images and upload to a Google Form

Prior to the tournament

  • The Doer should prepare the materials required. The two-dimensional object will be drawn using markers, but there will be no penalty for using different writing utensils (ex: pens, crayons, colored pencils). There will also be no penalty for using colors that are slightly different from the model. However, digital drawings, such as on a tablet, will not be accepted.
  • The coach needs to assign the Writer to the “Write It Do It-Writer” event and the Doer to the “Write It Do It-Doer” event. This is to ensure that the writer’s work gets automatically transferred to the doer by the software system.

 During the tournament

  • Writers:

    • Once the Writer starts the test, they will see one top-down image of the two-dimensional object taken from directly above. One horizontal and one vertical ruler will be included in the image to provide a sense of scale, but they are NOT graded nor required in the Doer’s submission.
    • The writer has 25 minutes to type instructions in the free response box. The instructions are autosaved every time they click outside of the box.
    • Once the writer is finished, they may submit. When the 25 minutes elapse, the instructions will automatically be submitted. There is no advantage to finishing early. Only the work autosaved from clicking outside of the box will be sent if the writer runs out of time! So writers MUST CLICK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX BEFORE THE TIME ENDS. Sorry, crazy software bug.
  • Doers:

    • The Doer should start their test on Scilympiad ONLY AFTER THE WRITER HAS SUBMITTED THEIR DESCRIPTION. Coaches will have to find a way to communicate between the writer and doer without the doer seeing the model. In the Scilympiad test, they will see the instructions from their Writer and a Google Form link that will be used for submission.
    • The Doer has 20 minutes to recreate the two-dimensional object to the best of their ability, using only the instructions provided from their Writer and the required materials. When the 20 minutes elapse, the session will automatically end.

Submission

  • Doers will have up to 10 minutes after the 20 minute test window to submit a picture of their two-dimensional object.
  • Go to the Google Form provided. (Link will be provided through SMRC)
  • Take a clear, top-down picture of your two-dimensional object, and upload this picture to the Google Form
  • Fill out the other required fields:
    • Writer’s name (Student 1 on the form)
    • Doer’s name (Student 2 on the form)
    • Team number
    • School name
  • Submissions are timestamped, and failure to submit within the allotted time may result in your work being unscored.
