Seminar Description:

The Diversity and Inclusion, Leadership Development Seminar, HLD 291, is for students who wish to enhance their understanding of diversity and inclusion and develop leadership skills. The Special Topics Seminar combines a practical knowledge of diversity and inclusion principles, communication skills, and service learning with leadership development. The class will meet on T.B.D. Register for HLD 291.

Seminar Requirements:

Students will meet weekly with DISC staff and guest speakers to learn diversity and inclusion principles and leadership skills.

Goals of the Leadership Foundations and Learning Outcomes:

 

  • Think critically about and value diversity
  • Recognize the importance of diversity in higher education and the workplace through raised awareness of underrepresented group identities and issues connected to being marginalized.
  • Identify protected classes.
  • Gain cognitive empathy and interact and adapt to and with diverse perspectives, individuals, and groups.
  • Manage difficult conversations using inclusive dialogue principles.
  • Create collaborative relationships with BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities and encourage allyship from members of the community at large.

 

 

  • Students define leadership on an intrapersonal level; describe and explain fundamental leadership principles, models, and theories.
  • Students utilize foundational leadership principles, including complex adaptive leadership theory, to inform their leadership development and personal expressions of leading in ways that honor humanity.
  • Students accurately interpret, diagnose, and influence real-world situations requiring positional and non-positional leadership.
  • Students critically identify and operate effectively in interpersonal situations.
  • Students design, investigate, and develop written papers and individual - or team-based – oral presentations that connect leadership theory and leader behavior to effective organizations and positive organizational outcomes.
  • Students formulate, develop, and practice effective leader and empowered follower behaviors in and out of the classroom.

Eligibility Requirements: 

All students can enroll in HLD-291 Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Seminar. There are no prerequisite courses, credit restrictions, or GPA requirements. Students may enroll in HLD-291 whether or not they are interested in becoming Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors through the Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons.
