To celebrate Montana State University’s 125th anniversary in February 2018, the university is announcing a poster design contest. MSU is asking for poster design submissions from across Montana and beyond. The contest will award prizes in four categories: MSU students, MSU alumni, Montana community members, and Montana high school students. Three top designs will be selected from each category. From those categories, one winning selection will be chosen as the grand prize winner to promote the yearlong celebration of MSU’s 125th anniversary. MSU will print and distribute the grand prize winning poster beginning in June 2017.
On the 125th anniversary of February 16, 1893, several signature events on the Bozeman campus will highlight the celebration. On February 16, 2018, the annual Awards for Excellence dinner and ceremony will be hosted in the SUB to celebrate the top MSU seniors and their mentors. On February 17, 2018, the Bobcat Birthday Bash, an all-day event centered around the MSU Centennial Mall and Romney Oval, will feature ice skating in the Romney Oval, a Ferris wheel, music and food, tours of campus programs and inspiring lectures. In addition, the Associated Students of MSU (ASMSU) will lead Olympic games for students, which will include an opening ceremony, cross country skiing and broom ball.
1. GENERAL INFORMATION
Entries must be submitted digitally though the official website by 4:00 pm (MST) on Friday April 28, 2017. See file specifications listed below. No hard copies or physical prints will be accepted.
The contest is open to the following groups:
1. MSU students enrolled in 2017 Spring semester
2. MSU alumni (anywhere in the world)
3. Montana community members (must be a Montana resident)
4. Montana high school students.
All artwork must be fully original. No entries will be accepted or considered if they are deemed to use in whole or part derivative images that are owned by others, unless permission for use is obtained by the entrant.
One entry per individual. Individuals may only enter in one category. All submissions must be created by an individual. Collaborations or team entries will not be accepted.
2. POSTER REQUIREMENTS
Posters must have a Montana State University theme that highlights MSU’s 125-year heritage as a land-grant university. The concept should reflect MSU’s accomplishments in learning, discovery and engagement that are empowering people and transforming the world. For example, some of MSU’s students, alumni and faculty are leaders in their fields who have made world-changing discoveries, travelled to outer space and launched many innovative creative works. Judges will look for how each submission best reflects MSU’s contribution to Montana and its people.

All poster submissions must measure exactly 18" x 24" and can be either horizontal or vertical format.
Digital File Specifications
Poster designs must be created in Adobe Illustrator or InDesign. Photoshop files will not be accepted. The submissions must be 300 dpi and should be uploaded as a PDF. Posters can be created in RGB or CMYK.
A panel of university leaders, a community representative and a design professional will judge entries. Winners will be announced May 20, 2017. The following prizes will be offered for each of the four categories:
- 1st place $1000
- 2nd place $500
- 3rd place $300
From the pool of top three entries in each category, one grand prize winner be selected as the poster to promote the event. In order to claim their prizes, winners must complete a W9 form with Montana State University. Winning posters and honorable mentions in each category will be displayed in a poster exhibition in the EXIT Gallery during the campus celebration in February 2018.
All entries become the property of Montana State University. Montana State University will retain the rights to all submissions. Entry in the contest constitutes full permission to publish names and photos of winners without further compensation. The determination of eligibility of entries and any interpretation of these rules is at the sole discretion of Montana State University and shall be final and binding upon all entrants. Entrant agrees that Montana State University shall own all entries. Entrant agrees that MSU 125th anniversary logos and or branding will be added to the poster design.
