Type Directors Club 2013 Exhibition: Power and Language

The Type Director's Club Exhibition is a review of the history and distinctive aesthetics of typography. It will give a sense of the evolution of the printed word and its impact and influence on society and the readers who consume it.

  • Type of Place – Wednesday, March 26th - 215 Cheever at 5:30 p.m.
    Can particular cultural identities be expressed through vernacular typography? What can be learned from isolating typography from different parts of the world? Is there such a thing as “typography of place”? We think, yes. This cross national cultural project has become a meaningful archive of the nuances and idiosyncrasies of local cultural traditions in the face of a rapidly globalizing world. And it is set to blow up to significant proportions with the upcoming launch of its own customized mobile app.

The Oxford Project began in 1984 when artist Peter Feldstein set out to photograph every single resident of his town, Oxford, Iowa (pop. 676). Twenty years later, Feldstein did it again, re-photographing as many of the original residents as he could locate—only this time, his neighbors didn't just pose, they talked.
