"I'm very excited to have Terry as part of my executive team," said MSU President Waded Cruzado. "He brings great energy and broad business experience to this critical position."
As the university's chief business and financial officer, Leist will oversee the human, physical and financial resources of MSU, including its annual institutional budget in excess of $450 million. He will also supervise the Office of Human Resources, University Police, Safety and Risk Management, Financial Services, Purchasing, University Budgets, Facilities Services, and Facilities Planning, Design and Construction. As a vice president, he will report directly to Cruzado.
"It's a great honor to be chosen for this position," Leist said. "I have the greatest respect for this university and for the people who work here. I'm humbled to be asked to serve in this permanent role."
As vice president, Leist will also work with MSU's campuses in Billings, Great Falls and Havre to develop financial and administrative plans, and will be the university's primary financial liaison with the Montana Board of Regents.
Prior to coming to MSU, Leist had a 22-year career with United Parcel Service where he was a financial controller at various UPS locations from 1997-2003. His last assignment was in Singapore as director of finance and accounting for UPS's Asia Pacific Region, which posted annual revenues exceeding $1.3 billion.
After coming to MSU in 2006, Leist served three years as budget and fiscal manager for MSU's Office of Student Success and two years as budget and fiscal director for MSU's Office of Academic Affairs. He was appointed interim vice president of Administration of Finance in March 2011.
He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa, a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in finance from Drake University.
Leist was chosen after a 13-member committee initiated a national search in January for a new vice president. He was among three finalists who interviewed on campus with students, faculty and staff.
