Henry L. Roediger, III, the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., will lecture on "Retrieval Practice to Enhance Learning and Retention: From the Laboratory to the Classroom."
Several of Roediger's current research projects focus on educational testing and memory.
Roediger's research has focused on the testing effect, which refers to the fact that material that is tested is better remembered on future tests than material studied for an equivalent amount of time. Roediger has investigated the circumstances that lead to successful learning through testing. His work explores how various testing variables, such as the type of test given, the spacing of tests, and the timing and types of feedback after tests promote retention. He also explores how those variables can be combined to enhance learning for different types of materials, such as foreign language vocabulary, scientific and historical expository texts.
He will also discuss the potential detriments to learning that can result from testing, such as exposing test-takers to erroneous information on multiple choice and true/false tests, and how negative effects can be minimized or corrected.
Roediger's lecture is sponsored by the MSU Department of Psychology and is presented by the College of Letters and Science's Distinguished Speakers Series. The series, which began in the spring of 2011, brings distinguished scholars to MSU to give a public talk and to meet with faculty and students in order to enrich the intellectual life on campus and to enhance research connections.
