BOZEMAN--The Montana Institute on Ecosystems is hosting Montana-focused discussions to accompany a global online climate course.

The World Bank is offering a free online course, called “Turn Down the Heat: Why a 4 Degrees Celsius Warmer World Must be Avoided.” Known as a MOOC, or massive open online course, it begins Jan. 27 and runs for four weeks. The Montana Institute on Ecosystems, or IoE, will host a weekly discussion group on the Montana State University campus as well as online discussions via the Web for Montanans who want to further discuss key concepts covered in the course and explore how they might relate to our state.

The World Bank's non-credit course is free and self-paced. Participants can view interactive video talks and access quizzes, readings and other activities. According to the World Bank website, the course “brings together renowned scientists to provide a synthesis of the most recent scientific evidence and presents an analysis of likely impacts and risks, with a focus on developing countries.”

The Montana discussion groups will be led by MSU Earth Sciences Assistant Professor and IoE Fellow Jamie McEvoy. The campus group will meet in Room 127 EPS at 2 p.m. for the Friday sessions through Feb. 21. Faculty, staff, students and members of the public are welcome to attend any of the discussion sessions. There is no charge to participate. Summaries of the discussions will be posted on the Institute on Ecosystems blog (http://montanaioe.org/blog/) The World Bank will also host social media channels for the course.
