Health care website names MSU's food and nutrition program one of 10 to check out

The food and nutrition program at Montana State University was recently featured as one of 10 notable dietetics and nutrition programs on a health care information website.

The 10 university programs included on the list at were recognized for giving students “the knowledge and tools necessary to assess and innovate nutrition programs for individuals and the public at large.”

The article noted that MSU offers both dietetics and nutrition options through the MSU Department of Health and Human Development. It also recognized a unique community involvement aspect to the program. 

“One thing that stands out about the Montana State program is their emphasis on community involvement -- graduates, alumni and senior-level students are all expected to participate in community service on some level,” wrote the article’s author, Justin Boyle.

Health and human development professor Alison Harmon, who serves as director of the food and nutrition program, said MSU’s dietetic students are engaged with the community at every level of their program.

“Since 2011, MSU also offers a non-degree graduate dietetic internship that places our finest students in supervised practice sites all over Montana,” Harmon said. “MSU dietetic interns are now involved in community, clinical and food service practice from Billings to Kalispell.”

MSU’s food and nutrition major, housed in the College of Education, Health and Human Development, offers two options: dietetics and nutrition science. Students in the dietetics option often go on to become registered dieticians and find employment in health care facilities; industrial, school, and university food services; community nutrition services; private practice; sales for food service or health products; and other related fields. Students who choose the nutrition science option often pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, industry or academia.
