MSU Provost David Dooley will introduce Core 2.0 at Tuesday's introductory session. He will explain what Core 2.0 will mean to students and their education at MSU, as well as how easily students can convert to the new core curriculum.
"Core 2.0 has been carefully shaped by MSU faculty over the past six years," said Greg Young, MSU's Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education. He said new requirements in Core 2.0 develop students' writing, thinking and learning skills. The new curriculum calls for improvements for all students who select it, he said. For instance, Core 2.0 calls for a university seminar, a diversity course and an undergraduate research experience for all students.
"The main theme of Core 2.0 is the process of scholarly inquiry," Young said. "That is, how professors discover and create new knowledge."
In addition to learning how to think and research, students in Core 2.0 will learn to write and explore. Under Core 2.0, students may select research or inquiry courses from four areas: arts, humanities, natural science and social science.
Students at Tuesday's session will learn how easy it will be to convert to the new curriculum. MSU has developed a conversion tool to help students determine what courses they need to complete Core 2.0.
Valerie Holznagel, of the College of Letters and Science who worked with the core implementation committee, said she hopes students take advantage of Core 2.0.
"Because we feel that most students will have a better undergraduate experience with the new core, we hope that students attend this event, visit the Web site, and learn that the new core conversion process is easy to understand and complete," she said. "The curriculum is better, and students who complete it will have a better foundation for their undergraduate education."
