The Montana State University Library is celebrating 100 years of the college “M” by creating an interactive display to be featured in coordination with this year’s homecoming events.
Showcased in the display are 20 different incarnations of the MSU “M” throughout the past century. Also included are class accomplishments and trivia, pulled primarily from yearbooks housed in the library’s Special Collections and Archives. Fun facts include:
- 1921 track team captain John Hastings was badly injured when his plane crashed into the side of the mountain, but still won first place in javelin in all his meets.
- The 1935 Montana State College freshman football team was called “The Bobkittens.”
Coloring stations are set up throughout the library, and students and other library visitors are invited to color the block “M” logo that will be incorporated into the display on a smaller version of Mount Baldy.
The exhibit is on display in the glass case in the main lobby through Oct. 6.
