Montana State University’s Extended University will host a full-day Excel training and a half-day payroll in QuickBooks course in November.

Excel (level 1) will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Gallatin College East, located at 705 Osterman Dr. in Bozeman.

The interactive, hands-on course includes an introduction to spreadsheet terminology and Excel's window components. Students will learn how to use the help system and navigate worksheets and workbooks, and will develop Excel skills by entering and editing text, values, formulas and pictures. Students will learn about moving and copying data; absolute and relative references; and ranges, rows, and columns. Participants will also learn simple functions, basic formatting techniques and printing.

The course is $129, which includes a course textbook. Tuition discounts are offered for members of the Prospera Business Network and Women’s Business Center; the Downtown Bozeman Association; and the chambers of commerce in Livingston and Big Sky.

Payroll in QuickBooks takes place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 21, at Gallatin Gateway School. Participants will learn the ins and outs of running payroll through the popular accounting software package for small business. Students will learn how to manage the employee list, gather employee info, work with an outside payroll service and set up QuickBooks to run payroll. Other topics to be covered include payroll deductions, creating paychecks, payroll liabilities, dealing with errors in payroll and more.

The course is hands-on in the computer lab. Participants should have a working knowledge of QuickBooks. The course is $79, or $64 for residents of Gallatin Gateway.

Both courses are taught by Deb Niedermeyer, a certified public bookkeeper who has been a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor since 1999.
